Scott Commissioners to Decide How to Collect Delinquent Taxes

Eight years ago, Lisa Riley of Scott was sworn in as the township's treasurer/tax collector to replace Donald Diebold, who had resigned because of illness.

Now Mrs. Riley is wondering if she will still have her job at the Scott tax office in the new year. Elected officials are expected to vote on who will hold the job at 5 p.m. Tuesday, the board's last meeting of 2016.

In addition to collecting Scott's delinquent taxes, Mrs. Riley collects overdue accounts for the Chartiers Valley School District, of which Scott is a part. She believes that collecting the two sets of taxes together makes sense and results in higher collections.

But Scott Commissioner Tom Castello said the collection of delinquent taxes has been an expensive problem for a while.

"We discovered almost two years ago that there were a lot of delinquencies in our tax office," he said, and procedure calls for delinquent taxpayers to be taken to court. …
