Budget for 2017 Does Not Raise Taxes

The property tax rate in Wilkinsburg is set to remain unchanged in 2017.

Council has adopted a $12 million budget that keeps the property tax rate at 14 mills. The Dec. 14 vote was unanimous, with Councilwoman Vanessa McCarthy-Johnson absent.

Council also approved a five-year contract that gives police officers represented by Teamsters Local No. 205 raises of 2 to 2.5 percent, for a total cost of $175,000 over five years.

"The Teamsters agreed to significant health care changes that should save the borough at least $225,000 over the same five years," borough manager Donn Henderson said.

"With the cooperation of our Teamster employees, council managed to reduce health care costs, which enabled the borough to offer a reasonable wage increase," Mr. Henderson said.

The contract is retroactive to 2015 and runs through 2019. …
