VENICE

VENICE -- Nighttime visits to Venice Municipal Beach Park will be easier during turtle nesting season, now that the city of Venice and Florida Power & Light have replaced parking lot lights with turtle- friendly LED lights.

"It's very, very dark there and we have a lot of people that use the beach after hours," noted council member Bob Daniels, who recently photographed the lights at night.

"My pictures didn't do justice; they really light up the lot there," he added. "That's a big improvement in turtle season, with safety."

The new lights were installed this month and can remain on during sea turtle nesting season -- which typically runs from May through November -- while in years past, the parking lot lights had to be extinguished so they would not confuse turtles and hatchlings. …
