In response to a growing waiting list of 47 people with disabilities, a 7,500-square-foot training facility is under construction on The Haven campus in Sarasota.

The Frank Stern Employment Training Center will enable Haven Industries to accept an additional 75 clients for training. The $1.1 million structure is expected to be finished by June 1.

The programs at Haven Industries provide a variety of practical vocational experience. They partner with 23 companies, providing clients with paying jobs. In Florida, the unemployment rate for people with special needs is more than 60 percent. At Haven Industries, more than 89 percent are employed.

The building is named after self-made millionaire Frank Stern, who died at age 95 in February 2014.
