Our Neighbor Haiti Needs Our Help after a Rough 2016

As 2016 draws to a close, I ask Post-Gazette readers to remember the struggles of our neighbors in nearby Haiti. This year has not been kind to them on many fronts. Leaderless since their president departed office in February, the great majority of the people of Haiti tragically limp along without the benefits of governance for their general welfare and basic human needs.

When Hurricane Matthew struck in early October ("Death Toll Rises as Haiti Digs Out from Hurricane Matthew," Oct. 8), an already troubling time for Haiti brought disaster: loss of life and home for many and a destruction of crops for many more, the threatening consequences of which will bring hunger and food insecurity.

Haiti now has a new president, Jovenel Moise ("Haiti Hobbles On," Dec. 4 editorial), who faces tremendous challenges on many fronts. …
