I grew up in Pittsburgh and worked there for a decade before moving to Philadelphia for a job. One thing I've learned from cities like Philadelphia, St. Louis and Boston is that a regional rail system makes commuting easier and cheaper.

Nearly every neighborhood in the Philadelphia area has a rail station connecting it to the businesses, universities and arenas in Center City. From where I live (close to my wife's job), it would take more than an hour sitting in traffic to get to work. Instead, I drive five minutes to a train station and zoom along past stagnant highways. It takes half the time and I read or rest instead of navigating traffic.

As a Pittsburgher, I believe it's time for us to expand our light-rail network. There are natural directions to extend the current system. …
