It was 5 p.m. on a Saturday ... when a family member called me to ask if it was OK to buy his 18-year-old son e-cigarettes for the holidays. "They aren't bad for you like cigarettes, right?"

So I did some research. The truthful answer is: We don't really know as a medical community. However, there is a lot of potential for harm that has been outlined not only by various medical organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics but also by the surgeon general in a recent report.

Would you want your child inhaling something either firsthand or secondhand that has not been rigorously studied and regulated by the Food and Drug Administration? In my and my family member's case, the answer is certainly no, and I imagine these sentiments would be universal for most parents if they were made aware of the potential harm of these products. …
