Kasich Vetoes Restrictive Law on Abortion

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio Gov. John Kasich wasted little time Tuesday in vetoing a measure that would have given Ohio the most restrictive abortion law in the nation.

He instead approved a lesser measure banning most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. The conflicting bills had reached his desk just hours earlier after passage last week.

"I agree with Ohio Right to Life and other leading pro-life advocates that [Senate Bill] 127 is the best, most legally sound and sustainable approach to protecting the sanctity of human life," Mr. Kasich said.

The so-called "Heartbeat Bill" would have banned nearly all abortions once a fetal heartbeat was detectable, as early as six weeks into pregnancy.
