Missouri Capital City Considers Free Uber Service on Governor's Inauguration Day

The Jefferson City city council is expected to consider a measure Tuesday that would provide free Uber service on the day Gov.-elect Eric Greitens, a Republican, is inaugurated.

Bill sponsor Councilman Rick Mihalevich said Monday that the measure would allow free rides with the ride-sharing service for 24 hours. The measure would require drivers to have insurance and pass a background check to ensure public safety, he said.

Six votes from the nine-member council are needed to approve the proposal.

"Governor-Elect @EricGreitens supports it and our inaugural team is trying to make it happen," Greitens' senior advisor Austin Chambers tweeted on Monday.

In the past, the city has used buses to accommodate crowds on Inauguration Day, Mihalevich said, but the number of attendees usually exceeds the capacity of local transportation. …
