WHS Basketball Coach Shares Lessons on Dealing with Adversity

"Just as in life, sometimes in sports we face adversity, Coach Bryan England told Putnam Rotarians at their Dec. 20 meeting in Hurricane. In his third year at Winfield High School, the boys varsity hoops coach quoted from a popular contemporary philosopher: "Remind yourself, in the darkest moments, that every failure is only a step toward success. Every detection of what is false directs you toward what is true. Every trial exhausts some tempting form of error. And every adversity will only hide, for a time, your path to peace and fulfillment.

"In basketball, we see adversity in every play. If you miss a shot, if you've lost the game, if there's an unfair foul call -- how you handle it determines where you go, England said.

"You've got to have a next-play' mentality. If you missed that shot, you can't dwell on it, because the game is fast and it will pass you by. …
