Hurricane High School and Winfield High School basketball teams, classmates, family members and other fans rooted in unison for a special spectator during the teams' Dec. 23 rivalry match-ups of freshman, JV and varsity squads in Winfield. The game was designated as a "Purple Out event, to demonstrate community support for Katie Cobb and her family. A Winfield Middle School student, Katie is receiving medical treatment for leukemia; purple is the color worn or otherwise used to represent the fight against the disease.

A 50/50 drawing was held, and T-shirts, bearing messages such as "No one fights alone! and "Team Katie, were sold at the game to raise funds and show support. The event raised $1,300 to help with the Cobb family's expenses.

Additionally, WHS coach Bryan England held a free youth basketball camp, with donations accepted for Katie and her family, on Dec. …
