Christmas Burglars Steal Money from Clifton Mosque

CLIFTON - On Christmas Eve, burglars stole cash from the city mosque's donation box. Then thieves struck once again on Christmas Day.

Police and mosque officials say there is no evidence that religious or cultural prejudice motivated the burglaries.

On Dec. 25, two suspects entered the Islamic Center of Passaic County on Pershing Road through an unlocked door and stole more than $300 in cash from donation bins, according to Clifton Police Department reports. That crime came just one day after another break- in in which thieves also gained entry through an unlocked door and took $20 from a donation box.

Detective Lt. Robert Bracken said the center appears to have been the victim of "crimes of opportunity."

"It's disgraceful but nothing appears to be biased in nature," he said.

Salaheddin Mustafa, a volunteer who serves as the center's outreach coordinator, also said the crimes do not appear to be bias incidents. …
