Democrats Hold All Seats Now on the South Hackensack Township Committee

SOUTH HACKENSACK - With the swearing in of a newcomer, the Township Committee is now entirely blue and will have a new mayor at its head.

One three-year term was up for grabs in the Nov. 8 election. Yris Encarnacion won the seat, defeating a Republican incumbent, Vincent Stefano, by 60 votes. Stefano, who served six years on the committee, was the lone remaining Republican.

Former Mayor Gary Brugger said that there had not been much, if any, dissention among the committee's members.

"Even with Stefano there, we all pulled in the same direction," he said.

Encarnacion, who was sworn in by Assemblywoman Marlene Caride at the Jan. 1 organization meeting, said she hopes to bring diversity and a different point of view to the committee.

"I want to be a liaison between the township and the community and try to create some programs for people to get involved," Encarnacion said. …
