Man Gets 20- to 40-Year Term for Homicide in Mckeesport

Winnie Gricar has counted the days.

As of Thursday, when James Husok was being sentenced for killing Ms. Gricar's son, Michael Welsh, it had been 475.

"My world just suddenly stopped. My heart broken, shattered. It will never be whole. It can never be put back together," she read.

Her words echoed those of Welsh's cousin, aunt and grandmother, who described the 27-year-old as "honorable," and spoke of the events in life that he will miss: family dinners, his own wedding, having children.

Mr. Welsh was shot Sept. 19, 2015, in the 300 block of Baker Alley in McKeesport.

Police said Husok received a call that morning from his estranged wife, Heather Guerra, who had been dating Mr. Welsh. She said she and Mr. Welsh had been fighting, so Husok picked her up and took her to his house. Then, police said, Mr. Welsh began texting Ms. Guerra. Husok went out looking for him, confronted him in the alley and shot him.

A jury found Husok, 27, guilty in October of third-degree murder. …
