Tax Increase Dedicated to Township Fire Departments, Police Force New Manager to Lead Growing Town

Collier commissioners last week approved a $7.9 million operating budget for 2017 that includes a tax increase to fund emergency services.

The property tax rate was set at 3.13 mills, which consists of a general rate of 2.73 mills and a new emergency services rate of 0.4 mill.

The 0.4-mill increase will mean an additional $40 in taxes for every $100,000 of property value, according to Jeff Hinds, Collier finance director.

The increase will provide a total of $380,000 for public safety, he said.

Seventy percent of that amount will be given to the Kirwan Heights, Presto and Rennerdale fire departments, and the remaining 30 percent will go to the township police. The money also may be used to pay public works employees.

The board also approved a $654,976 capital budget for 2017. The vote on both budgets and the tax rate was 4-0, with Commissioner Nichole Feller absent.

Collier officials said farewell to borough manager Sal Sirabella, who is retiring after five years in the position, and they welcomed new manager Kyle Thauvette. …
