Former Sarasota resident Mary Jean Hamilton died Aug. 24 in her McMinnville, OR home. She was 91.

Mrs. Hamilton lived in Sarasota from 1967 to 1970, in Sapphire Shores, and again from 1986 to 2004, at the Landings, with her husband, the theologian William Hamilton, a professor of religion in the early days of New College. They returned to Oregon to be close to family. Her husband died in 2012.

During her time in Sarasota, she spent 16 years as a volunteer at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

She was born in New York City on Feb. 26, 1925 to Dr. Ross Golden, the first chairman of the Department of Radiology at Columbia Medical School, and Hazel Smith, a music teacher from Rockford, IL. She grew up in Larchmont, NY and graduated in 1943 from Mamaroneck High School. …
