Brian O'Neill's Jan. 5 column ("Why Envy Pittsburgh? An Educated Guess") highlighted what is special about Pittsburgh -the long respect for higher education. Yes, Andrew Carnegie and the Mellons put their money into our great schools, but the overriding factor was that the schools were always there.

Just a few years after the end of the Revolutionary War, Pitt began in this wilderness. "School" as a concept is a part of our regional thinking -right there with the rivers.
