Sala Udin to Run for City School Board Seat

Sala Udin, the former Pittsburgh councilman and co-chairman of the Hill District Education Council, announced Friday that he will run for the District 3 seat on the Pittsburgh Public Schools board.

The news came a day after Thomas Sumpter, who has held the seat since December 2005, said he would not seek re-election this year. Mr. Udin is the first person to declare as a candidate for the seat.

In a statement, Mr. Udin emphasized recent reports that said district students generally fall below the state median for academic performance and that minority students trail even more in those and other outcomes.

"Although our students have the intellectual capacity and talent potential for a competitive educational experience, it is ultimately up to us - the adults - to provide them with the resources, the excellent teaching and other resources necessary for outstanding academic performance," said Mr. Udin, 73, of the Hill District. "But throughout Pittsburgh communities there is deep concern because so many of our students perform so near the bottom of measurable student performance. ..."

Mr. Udin added: "It is my hope that I can put my experience to work and help to fashion a strategy to greater improve on the unsatisfactory results we have been seeing. …
