Winter Classic a Hit in St. Louis but a Dud Nationally

The Winter Classic was a huge success in St. Louis, on the ice and off. The outdoor NHL game at Busch Stadium between the Blues and Chicago Blackhawks on Monday afternoon brought more than 50,000 people to downtown, counting those inside the ballpark and those watching on television at nearby watering holes.

It also was a big hit on St. Louis television, as Nielsen says 15.5 percent of homes with a TV in the market tuned in to NBC's coverage, on KSDK (Channel 5). That was the second-best rated Blues regular-season game dating to 1995, behind only the 17.5 figure KPLR (Channel 11) drew for the contest in 1996 in which Wayne Gretzky made his home debut as a Blue.
