1859 The Western Pennsylvania Historical Society held its first meeting in the Merchants Exchange.

1946 The commonwealth asked the city and county to contribute a total of $6 million as their share of the estimated $31 million cost of the Penn-Lincoln Parkway.

1951 Sinclair Lewis, author of "Babbitt" and "It Can't Happen Here" and the first U.S. writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, died in Rome at age 65.
