Gun Charge Filed Following Mall Shooting Weapon Traded for Drugs, Man Says

Monroeville police have charged a Pittsburgh man with illegal possession of a firearm and possession of drugs after he told them he traded a handgun -that was later used in a shooting -for heroin.

Rodney Nathaniel Taylor of Hays was taken into custody Friday afternoon shortly after fleeing the scene of a shooting in the parking lot of Monroeville Mall. Witnesses told police that Taylor ran into the Macy's department store and exited into the mall's lower level near the Cinemark movie theaters, where an armed Pitcairn police officer ordered him to the ground.

Taylor told police he had been in the area of the shooting "and took off running for his safety."

Monroeville police Chief Doug Cole said the victim of the shooting was struck in the leg and drove himself to UPMC East hospital. He has not been identified. …
