While it was nice to see in the Jan. 5 Weekend Magazine section a listing of movies that will be released during the first quarter of the new year, it is also extremely disheartening that a newspaper that bills itself as "One of America's Great Newspapers" has not had a regular local film critic since the departure of Barbara Vancheri a while back.

Thus, most film reviews are merely reprints of critics from news services in larger cities, and there was no "Top 10 Movies of the Year" to end 2016. Oh, yes, Tony Norman was on hand to write a review for "Fences" because it was filmed here, and Barry Paris will provide an occasional review of a major art-type film, but on the whole, I long for the '70s and '80s when every day the Post-Gazette offered George Anderson's "Stage and Screen" column and reviews of everything from a single voice to enjoy over breakfast. …
