Citgo to Pay Fine after Consumer Fraud Investigation

Citgo has agreed to pay a $450,000 fine after an investigation into the company selling off-brand gas under its name, authorities said Thursday.

Attorney General Christopher Porrino announced that Texas-based Citgo Petroleum Corp. will pay the fine and change its practices after an investigation by the Division of Consumer Affairs. Violations of the Motor Fuels Act, the Consumer Fraud Act and the Advertising Regulations were found.

A number of retail dealers had been selling unbranded or off- brand gasoline as Citgo in violation of the Motor Fuels Act, authorities said. To resolve these and other allegations, the company entered into an agreement that addresses motor fuel brand integrity.

In 2014, the division obtained invoices and fuel delivery tickets from various Citgo retail dealers in New Jersey. …
