Iceoplex Owner Gets Prison Sentence

The owner of Iceoplex, one of the region's best-known indoor sports facilities, faces up to four years in prison following his sentencing Thursday on tax charges.

Steven Lynch, 61, a tax attorney from Squirrel Hill, has until mid-March to report to federal prison, but he will appeal the sentence, one of his attorneys said. U.S. District Judge Arthur Schwab handed down the sentence, which also includes $793,145 in restitution and a $75,000 fine, in front of dozens of Lynch supporters, some of whom wept.

Iceoplex, at the Southpointe complex in Cecil, was once the Pittsburgh Penguins' practice facility. Lynch also owns a restaurant, a real estate firm and a gym.

Prosecutors had sought a 51-month sentence, following Lynch's conviction in September on numerous counts of willful failure to pay payroll taxes from 2012 on. Federal agents said he failed to withhold about $1.5 million in payroll taxes by creating a shell corporation to shield the money from the IRS. …
