Student Gifts Remind Officers Community Cares

SARASOTA POLICE

SARASOTA -- Students from two Sarasota schools offered letters and handcrafted ornaments to city police officers Wednesday, to thank them for their service to the community.

The gifts were presented during a press conference with Sarasota Police Chief Bernadette DiPino, who thanked the students from Sarasota Military Academy and Sarasota School for Arts and Sciences with commemorative "Blue & You" coins.

"I was so psyched to see all these officers here," said SSAS eighth-grader David Mazon. "They are really awesome to risk their life for us each day.

"I would just say "THANK YOU" in huge letters because they're the best."

The students honored police officers as part of the Downtown Improvement District's First Responder Appreciation Month.

Eric Massey, a real estate broker who helped organize the monthlong event, said downtown businesses will also show their appreciation with posters, pins and flags at their stores. …
