We Must End Exclusionary Discipline in Schools

Your front-page story on the report of the Council of the Great City Schools ("City Schools Report Lays Out Daunting Challenges," Jan. 11) highlights "extraordinarily high" rates of suspensions and expulsions that are plaguing Pittsburgh schools.

Particularly troubling are the stark racial, gender and disability disparities that exist. Students of color and students with disabilities are disproportionately excluded from school, even when they exhibit the same or similar behaviors as their white and non-disabled peers.

School exclusions, even for young children, are associated with lifetime negative outcomes. The report further notes that exclusionary discipline policies and practices hurt these students academically by reducing instructional time and contributing to achievement gaps. …
