Ex-Teacher Files Lawsuit over Firing

A former social studies teacher at a Paterson charter school has filed a federal lawsuit claiming he was fired because he had to take time away from work for military service.

Erik Verniere, of Ridgefield Park, claims in his suit that the staff at the Paterson Charter School for Science and Technology told him it "was not conducive to his career" to miss school training due to his military obligations.

Verniere, a soldier in the New Jersey Army National Guard's 1st Squadron of the 102nd Cavalry Regiment, had requested time off for military service. On Nov. 25, 2015, he said administrative staff questioned his military leave, according to court documents.

He filed a letter objecting to alleged discrimination against his military status on May 5, 2016, and was told the same day that his employment was ending in June. …
