LAST year was the hottest ever recorded on Planet Earth, outstripping the previous record set in 2015, which outstripped the record set in 2014, science agencies report.

This ever-worsening climate change, caused by human emissions of "greenhouse gases" into the sky, likely will create stronger hurricanes, worse droughts, more wildfires, deeper floods, worse tornadoes, more coastal erosion from rising sea levels, more tropical diseases and other nature disorders that inflict hundred- billion-dollar losses on humanity.

Will this snowballing calamity eventually bring trillion-dollar annual destruction and the loss of tens of thousands of lives? Will sea rise, caused by melting arctic ice, make coastal cities abandoned wrecks?

If it does, maybe coal industry chiefs and West Virginia politicians finally will stop denying that global warming is a peril - and stop denouncing federal pollution-control efforts. …
