State Panel Backs Paterson's Firing of Personnel Director

PATERSON - The city has prevailed in the latest decision involving the termination of former Paterson personnel director Betty Taylor, who received $43,000 in federal home repair money even though officials say her income exceeded the eligibility limit.

The New Jersey Civil Service Commission on Wednesday overturned a recent administrative law judge decision that said Taylor should only get a six-month suspension, according to a state spokesman. Instead, the commission upheld the city's firing of Taylor two years ago.

"The record speaks for itself, I'm confident we would have won if we had to appeal," said Mayor Jose "Joey" Torres.

Taylor's lawyer, Neal Brunson, said he was not aware of the commission's decision. "I'll have to read it before I make any comment," Brunson said. …
