Seat Remains Vacant Judge Considers Validity of Plum School Board Vacancy before Decision

A Court of Common Pleas judge will determine whether there is a true vacancy on the Plum school board before making a decision about who will hold the position.

Judge Michael McCarthy told attorneys he will notify them as soon as he decides whether Michelle Stepnick's resignation from the school board in September is valid, and if so, who will fill that seat.

"I do believe there's urgency, but I don't believe there's injunctive relief necessary today," Judge McCarthy said during a motion hearing Wednesday.

The school board's next meeting is Jan. 10.

During the hearing, Judge McCarthy heard from attorneys representing Ms. Stepnick, the Plum Borough School District and the group of taxpayers that petitioned the court to weigh in on the issue.

Ms. Stepnick announced her resignation and walked out of the meeting in which the board voted 4-3 to reinstate superintendent Timothy Glasspool following an independent investigation of the district sex abuse scandal. …
