Retail Rising Training Program Aims to Professionalize the Field

The National Retail Federation Foundation is introducing a job-training program. The idea is to help retail employees do a better job and for the rest of us to better understand and appreciate retail work. But more training isn't all that retail employees need. They need the opportunity to earn higher wages, too.

The initiative, backed by major chains, will provide training both for entry-level jobs - nearly a third of the country's first jobs are in retail, NRF says - and for building a career in the industry. Gaining and keeping employees was a major focus of this month's NRF trade show.

Customers see retail workers using bar-code scanners and stocking shelves. But they don't know all the work that goes on behind the scenes. Employees also may need to understand how a store and its website interact and how to track inventory and address customer-service challenges. …
