Meet Vincent Caruso, New Lodi Municipal Manager

Article excerpt

LODI -- The retired police chief has found a new role serving the borough as the municipal manager. With three weeks on the job, Vincent Caruso said he plans to create more transparency, update borough technology, and fulfill the mayor and council's vision for Lodi for the next two years.

He served the Lodi Police Department for 27 years, 12 as chief, until he retired in 2014. Caruso then went on to work in the private security sector with the intention of seeking a local government position. He also continued his education receiving a master's degree in Government/Administrative Science from Fairleigh Dickinson University and is a certified public manager.

The mayor and council hired Caruso out of 14 applicants for the job at the end of the 2016 with a two-year contract. His salary for 2017 is $139,000 and will be $141,780 in 2018.

A: After retiring, I jumped from one career to another. I was in the private security sector with two different companies, but I always wanted to get back in public service and government. It's an easy transition from going to a police chief into a town and running the local government end. It's very similar. I've applied to other municipalities and became a finalist in a lot of other towns. Fortunately, this came up and this was the right move for me. …
