Hackensack Hospital Plans to Add 300k Square Feet with Tower

Hackensack University Medical Center plans to build a 300,000- square-foot tower on Second Street in Hackensack to add operating rooms and three floors of private rooms, officials said.

Construction, expected to begin next year, would replace current inpatient operating rooms and replace some existing intensive care unit beds while adding several private rooms, said Mark D. Sparta, executive vice president and chief operating officer at the hospital.

Sparta said the project is in the "very early design phase" and will need state approval as well as local permits before construction can begin.

An architectural firm has started preliminary design work and has consulted with surgeons, administrators and other hospital officials to complete the most effective design. The renderings should be completed within the next four to six weeks, Sparta said. …
