PARAMUS - Fewer crimes were reported in 2016 than last year, police said this week.

Crime in Paramus dropped in six of seven categories on a year- over-year basis - including a 16 percent drop in robberies and a 61.8 percent drop in motor vehicle thefts, according to the annual State of New Jersey Uniform Crime Report.

Even after a late-summer spike of residential burglaries that struck Bergen County, the Paramus Police Department reported a 9.8 percent drop in burglaries.

The seven major categories in the report are rape, robbery, aggravated assault, simple assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft and larceny/theft.

"We credit these decreases on a proactive approach to crime and an expansion of our collaboration and information sharing with other law enforcement entities," Paramus Chief of Police Kenneth Erhenberg said in a statement. …
