Gaining Freight Report on Shipping Signals Economic Growth

A recent report from the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission predicts a 40 percent jump in regional freight traffic by 2040, partly because of predicted commercial development. The report provides a snapshot of the economic opportunity the region is poised to leverage, but it's also a reminder of the need to upgrade the regional infrastructure needed to keep the freight moving.

In 2011, according to the report, the 10-county region handled more than 201 million tons of freight, with about 82 million tons inbound, about 71 million outbound and the balance moved internally. By 2040, according to the estimates, freight handling will increase to more than 282 million tons, with about 103.4 million coming into the region, about 105.4 million leaving it and the balance moved within the 10 counties. …
