1871 The retail division of the Joseph Horne Co. moved into Library Hall on Penn Avenue, a building that previously had housed Mercy Hospital.

1944 On the 11th day of the garbage strike, City Council passed two ordinances to end the 3-year-old municipal operation and to place the collection of garbage in the hands of private contractors.

1978 A blizzard struck the area, knocking out power and disrupting telephone service.

2007 The Democratic-controlled Senate Foreign Relations Committee passed a nonbinding measure, 12-9, dismissing President George W. Bush's plans for a troop buildup in Iraq as "not in the national interest" of the United States.
