Over the objections of some officials, Peters has sold the 19th-century Bower Hill School to a contractor who plans to convert it into a day care center.

Township council Monday night approved the sale of the school on Bower Hill Road to lone bidder Thomas Robinson, owner of T.A. Robinson Asphalt Paving Inc. in Bridgeville, for $25,000.

Under terms of the bid, Mr. Robinson agreed to restore the school to its original look, council said. He also wants to put an addition on the back to accommodate a home.

Mr. Robinson must first get zoning approval before moving forward with a day care center because the former schoolhouse is in a residential zone.

Bower Hill was a one-room schoolhouse built in the 1830s. The township bought the schoolhouse in 2013, and it has been vacant and in need of repair, including fixing a hole in the roof, for years. …
