Disabled Army Veteran Returns to Renovated Home in Pine Lawn

PINE LAWN * Sirens could be heard in the distance as about two dozen North County Police Cooperative officers, politicians, volunteers and friends gathered outside Fred Reeves' house Thursday.

Then 11 patrol cars, lights flashing and sirens blaring, pulled onto the 65-year-old's street, and Lt. Col. John Buchannan opened the door to his unmarked police SUV to let the disabled Army veteran out.

The crowd applauded and Chief Tim Swope gave Reeves keys to his rehabilitated 1,000-square-foot, one-story home. The two men tearfully embraced, and Reeves walked up to his door.

Curious neighbors peered out their windows and others watched from a distance as the culmination of about three days of work came to an end.

The project, spearheaded by the police department, happened after the nonprofit Beyond Housing secured a $5,000 grant from Home Depot to renovate the home. …
