Post-Gazette TV writer Rob Owen offers a viewing tip for the coming week

THURSDAY

"Training Day," 10 p.m., CBS.

A sequel series to the 2001 feature film directed by Pittsburgh native Antoine Fuqua, who serves as an executive producer on this series, the new "Training Day" follows a veteran police officer (Bill Paxton) with squishy ethics who's spied on by his new protege (Justin Cornwell) for his police department bosses.

"People say, 'Well, what's the difference? It's another cop show,'" said Mr. Paxton. "It's the people, man. It's the characters. You want to go on the ride. Sure, we're catching bad guys. We're shooting people. We're doing all that stuff. But do you want to hang with these people?"

Mr. Cornwell, playing a character in a similar role to the one played by Ethan Hawke in the movie that also starred Denzel Washington, said the roles aren't identical. …
