Much ado was made by the Trump Administration - and then the national media - about the media's reports that hundreds of thousands fewer people attended Donald Trump's inauguration than did Barack Obama's in 2009 and 2013. White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer called a news conference to berate the national media for reporting such. "This was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration. Period. Both in person and around the globe, Spicer emphasized, offering no data to back up his claim.

Trump spokeswoman Kellyanne Conway note-worthily said the next day that the administration had "alternative facts that showed different numbers than the media had reported.

Really though, this brouhaha can be easily explained. Perhaps the Trump administration truly believed his inaugural crowd was bigger, despite multiple reliable data sources proving otherwise. Rumor is the Trump administration used the same people to estimate crowd size as did the organizers of the Charleston Sternwheel Regatta back in its heyday.

Mystery solved! …
