I am a first-generation immigrant from India. I am also a Muslim.

I landed at JFK airport on Dec. 26, 1969. I had only $37.50 to my pocket and first-semester tuition paid in advance.

I arrived in Pittsburgh a few days later and went to Carnegie Mellon University, where I finished my master's degree and worked on a Ph.D. When my funds ran out, I quit my studies and worked full time to support my wife and daughter.

I saved money and bought my first car and then a house. I sent my two daughters to college and they, too, have a degree. We all have a house and bought several cars. We have made several thousand trips to local supermarkets, department stores, etc.

In my opinion, and I hope economists would agree, this money is well spent and good for the economy. …
