Rotary's Readers Helping Students

Article excerpt

Count the Rotary Club of Lakewood Ranch in the fight to help Manatee County educators improve grade-level literacy.

Through its "Books for Kids" program, 55 trained volunteers visit 55 classrooms at seven elementary schools including Ballard, Oneco, Daughtrey, Samoset and Tillman in Manatee, plus two in Sarasota. They read aloud a selected book and engage students in discussion to improve vocabulary development, concentration on reading, listening comprehension skills, critical thinking and more.

"There is a need to help and that need continues to grow as more and more boys and girls are reading below grade level," said Rotary's Ted Lindenberg, the program founder. "That's what 'Books For Kids' is doing. We are reaching out to 1,100 boys and girls each month."

After each visit, those children receive a book to take home, too.

Superintendent Diana Greene, along with principals and volunteers from participating schools, will celebrate the program's success at a Books For Kids Luncheon at noon Thursday at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club, 7650 Legacy Blvd., Lakewood Ranch.

For more details or to RSVP, contact Lindenberg at or call 845-304-5793.
