WAYNE - Opportunity is a funny thing. It can be there for the taking, but it doesn't come with any guarantees. Seizing opportunity is often the difference between winning and losing.

St. Joseph learned that lesson the hard way on Friday night at the Ice Vault in the Pepsi Varsity Holiday Classic. The Green Knights had their opportunity against Seton Hall Prep, but they could not turn it into a victory.

The 2-1 loss to the Pirates will be seen as a solid effort, but in the end it was a squandered opportunity, said SJR coach Larry Mahurter.

"We need to find a better way of preparing for games," he said. "The coaches are preparing much better than the players. This was a winnable game against one of the top teams in the state.

"I thought we battled real hard, but the mental side, the focus, there has to be a better approach to the game. We're not there yet. I'm proud of the way we played, but that's a winnable game."
