NEW YORK - Sunday afternoon in Atlanta, the Knicks took solace in their exhaustion, having come up short on the scoreboard but gathering kudos for effort at least, after a shorthanded battle through four overtime sessions.

But Tuesday night in Washington there were no moral victories.

The exhaustion may have been there, but the heroic effort wasn't, as the Knicks dropped a one-sided loss to the Wizards at Verizon Center.

They spoke instead afterward about the possibility that the long game Sunday had caught up to them and so, too, had the long month of January.

The Knicks played 17 games in January, including four back-to- back sets -- and Wednesday night in Brooklyn against the Nets, they started February by finishing off one more back-to-back pairing.

When January began they spoke about fighting through this harsh stretch of the schedule, but by the end they had limped out of it, just happy to put it behind them.

"Goodbye, January," Carmelo Anthony said.

It wasn't just the stress of the schedule on the floor, but the Knicks found themselves dealing with a constant drip of off-court problems.

Anthony has been dealing with trade rumors -- even though he possesses a no-trade clause -- as Phil Jackson's sniping at him has led to a possible parting, the Knicks searching for a trade partner who can satisfy Anthony and bring back a reasonable return.

Derrick Rose went AWOL early in the month and ended it with his left foot in a protective boot, nursing a sprained ankle.

Kristaps Porzingis walked out of the locker room in Washington on Tuesday night with a hoodie pulled up over his head, barely visible as he tried to manage the nausea that forced him to sit out the game.
