It's Most Likely Last Call for Fitz as the Jets' QB

FLORHAM PARK -- Ryan Fitzpatrick stood in front of his locker on Wednesday afternoon and smiled at the question.

Someone asked if he wanted to be back with Jets next season.

"There's probably a reality to that one," Fitzpatrick said. "An obvious reality the way the year is going to come to a close for me."

The reality is that Fitzpatrick's career with the Jets almost certainly will come to an end on Sunday against the Bills. It could be his final NFL start, too.

When the season began, Fitzpatrick was the Jets unquestioned starter. He was coming off a 31-touchdown season, a personal best and a franchise record. He signed a one-year, $12 million contract just before training camp, and the expectation was for Fitzpatrick and the Jets to build on a 10-win season in 2015.

Fitzpatrick, 34, did not meet that expectation. Instead, he's had the toughest season of his 12-year NFL career.

"This has been the most difficult," Fitzpatrick said, "Just in terms of the expectations I had for myself, for the team, all those things. And for me not to be able to meet some of that stuff definitely has been difficult."

Fitzpatrick has thrown for 10 touchdowns and 17 interceptions this season in 13 games. His poor play got him benched twice this season in favor of the backup. The only reason he's playing now is because both Geno Smith, who replaced Fitzpatrick in Week 7, and Bryce Petty, who replaced him in Week 14, have suffered season- ending injuries.

The last time Fitzpatrick played Buffalo, in Week 2, he was named the AFC's Offensive Player of the Week after throwing 24 of 34 passes for 375 yards and a touchdown. But the next week, at Kansas City, it all went wrong. …
