EDITOR'S COLUMN

There are a bunch of reasons to attend Saturday's Bradenton Area River Regatta (see page 6). And as someone who spends a whole lot of time dining in downtown Bradenton, let me offer some suggestions on where and what to eat within walking distance of the Manatee River. Because, really, you can do better than just a bland burger from a random vendor.

Pier 22: Downtown Bradenton's sole waterfront restaurant has something for everyone including a full sushi menu featuring my current fave: the South of the Border roll (yellowtail tuna, togarashi, lime aioli, all "super crunched"). Also, don't miss out on the daily happy hour deals from 3 to 7 p.m. Info: 941-748-8087; pier22dining.com

Mattison's City Grille Bradenton Riverwalk: Nestled behind the Riverwalk's sand volleyball courts, the new restaurant by Sarasotan Paul Mattison (he took over the location in December) has the highly addictive "High Plains Bison Poutine," featuring grilled bison over crispy fries, with roasted onions and mushroom cream. Info: 941-896- 9660; mattisons.com

Corwin's Ice Cream and Smoothies: Part of the Twin Dolphin Marina that also includes Pier 22, Corwin's is right by the Riverwalk's west entrance and a popular destination for children of all ages seeking frozen sweets and smoothies. Info: corwinsicecream.com

Lou's Diner: From a menu teeming with tasty comfort foods, I'm partial to the shepherd's pie, which can be delivered at no extra charge two doors down to a bar stool at sister business McCabe's Irish Pub. There, you can enjoy it properly: with a perfectly poured pint of Guinness. Info: 941-254-4973

Jennings Downtown Provisions: This new place owned and operated by the same family behind the beloved Central Cafe has a relatively small menu that never misses. So where do you start? The soft pretzel served with beer-braised sausage, garlic butter, house mustard, pickles and a spot of salad covered in balsamic drizzle. Pair it with a Lola wine. Info: 941-896-5450

Fav's Italian Cucina: Owned and operated by the same sibling team since 2000, Fav's serves pretty much homemade everything from the pasta to the mozzarella to the dough used in the hand-tossed pizzas and it's all awesome. …
