Hynes Calls Blue Jackets Coach Tortorella a 'Mentor'

COLUMBUS, Ohio - They were opposing coaches on Saturday night.

But John Hynes does not hesitate to call the Blue Jackets' John Tortorella a "mentor" after their experience together with Team USA in this fall's World Cup of Hockey.

The 41-year-old Devils coach served as an assistant to Tortorella, 58, as Team USA went a disappointing 0-3 in the World Cup.

"He's actually become a bit of a mentor," Hynes said. "I didn't know him well prior to the World Cup. We had the opportunity to spend some time together this summer with some coaches' meetings and some social settings. We got along great. During the World Cup, it was a tremendous experience."

Hynes said he considers Tortorella, who won the Stanley Cup in 2004 with the Lightning and has also coached the Rangers and Canucks, "one of the best American coaches in the NHL in history."

"I learned a lot about how he runs his teams and some of the things that made him successful," Hynes said.
