Allegheny County Encouraging Enrollment in Home Visitor Programs

Attention, expectant mothers and mothers of young children: Allegheny County now has free home visitor services available.

Officials Monday announced the launch of "Open Doors to Home Visiting," a campaign to raise awareness and encourage moms and families to enroll in one of the county's free home visiting programs.

Such programs send a nurse, social worker or fellow parent to visit the home of a mom-to-be or mom of a child under age 6.

That "home visitor" answers questions and offers assistance with breastfeeding, child growth and development issues and general parenting problems, and connects them with nutrition or medical assistance.

Such programs can help to decrease infant mortality and combat health inequalities, said Allegheny County Health Department director Karen Hacker. …
