ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS - Local, county and state officials, members of local environmental groups and executives from LG Electronics broke ground on the consumer electronics company's new headquarters Tuesday morning.

The building project, proposed in 2010, had a rocky road to construction. The $300 million headquarters was originally approved and received a variance for a 143-foot-tall building, above the borough's normal 35-foot cap. Residents sued both LG and the borough, while conservationist groups lobbied to lower the height of the building, saying the design would breach the tree line and irreversibly alter the view of the Palisades. Englewood Cliffs rezoned a stretch along the Palisades allowing for buildings of that height, but later repealed the rezoning.

In June 2015, the company announced a deal with conservationist groups to reduce the height to under 70 feet. …
