Hardiman Deserves Credit for His Record of Helping People

My personal choice for a Supreme Court nominee would not have been any of those that President Donald Trump had under consideration. Nevertheless, I was sorely disappointed that he chose Judge Neil Gorsuch over Judge Thomas M. Hardiman, the Pittsburgher who serves on the Third U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. My disappointment is not just because he is "one of ours," but more because few of the current justices, and Judge Gorsuch too, have the "blue collar" background Judge Hardiman would have brought to the bench. Judge Hardiman, the first member of his Massachusetts family to graduate from college, worked his way through school, like so many of his fellow Pittsburghers.

Does it matter? I believe it matters a great deal when a justice hears a case involving people who have worked hard for a living, have been treated unjustly, and stand before the highest court in the land hoping for a fair hearing. …
